El Palmar is a single stretch of fine golden sand running from the Conil boundary to the Torre Nueva, a 16th-century watchtower that now marks the southern end. There is nothing built on the seafront: low dunes, a few timber beach bars and the Atlantic in front of you.
Being an open beach, the swell is real and the bottom drops away quickly in places. In summer there are lifeguards and flags along the central section, which is also where the beach bars cluster. Towards either end, especially near the Torre Nueva, it empties out entirely.
It is one of the few beaches in the province where you can walk two hours in a straight line without passing a single building. At sunset, at low tide, the wet sand mirrors the whole sky.
El Palmar is the province’s reference break. It works mainly from October to May, when Atlantic lows send west and north-west swell; in high summer the sea usually goes flat and the beach becomes a swimming beach.
The bottom is sand and the peaks shift with the tides, which makes it approachable for beginners on small days and demanding when size arrives. Several surf schools in the village offer lessons and board hire, and you will normally see beginner courses running along the central section.
If you are travelling specifically to surf, the best trade-off between swell and water temperature is October, November, March and April. Winter calls for a 4/3 wetsuit.
Vejer de la Frontera is 11 km away, perched on a hilltop and widely counted among Spain’s most beautiful villages: walls, Moorish lanes, courtyards and a palm-lined square. It deserves a full afternoon and dinner up there.
To the south, about 10 km on, are Los Caños de Meca and Cape Trafalgar, with its lighthouse on a sand isthmus and the La Breña y Marismas del Barbate Natural Park — a pine forest on top of cliffs, with waymarked trails and Atlantic viewpoints.
Conil is 11 km north and Barbate 15 km south, so El Palmar works well as a base for the whole La Janda coastline without changing accommodation.
You come in off the A-48, exiting towards Vejer or Conil and then dropping down to the coast. It is around 70 km from Jerez airport (XRY) and about 160 km from Seville (SVQ). The city of Cádiz is 50 km away.
A car is close to essential here: there is no large supermarket and no frequent public transport, and services are spread along the beach road. In exchange, parking is never the problem it is in Conil.
Worth knowing: El Palmar is quiet. Beach bars, music at sunset, and not much else. Anyone after town nightlife will find it in Conil or Vejer.
